VIRGINIA (August 31, 2021)—Governor Ralph Northam offers posthumous pardons for Martinsville Seven.
The Martinsville Seven were a group of seven Black men from Martinsville, Virginia,
Martinsville, Virginia who were wrongfully convicted and executed in 1951 due to the color of their skin for allegedly raping a white woman in 1949. There ages were between 18 and 23. There were tried during separate trials—except for two who agreed to be tried together. All were found guilty of the false rape charges, and each was sentenced to death—being the largest reported mass execution for rape in the United States.
