US Supreme Court Halts Ramirez’s Execution, Wants To Hear Oral Arguments On Religious Rights

TEXAS (September 9, 2021)– John Ramirez was scheduled to die Wednesday. His last request to the state had been to let his pastor hold on to him as he died, something the state denied. The high court wants to hear oral arguments on the matter later this year.

Texas has executed two men so far this year, the only state to do so in 2021, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. The federal government executed three men in January, before President Joe Biden took office. Another six men are set to be executed in Texas this year, with another man’s death scheduled for March.
