Congressman Barry Moore says Biden misses the mark on ‘taxpayer funded PR trip’ to Alabama

ALABAMA (May 3, 2022)–Alabama Republicans criticized President Biden’s decision to visit a weapons plant in Pike County today, saying the president should spend his time addressing problems they blame on his policies, such as inflation, high gas prices, and illegal immigration.

Biden is coming to Alabama today to visit the Lockheed Martin plant north of Troy. The company manufactures Javelin missiles that Ukraine is using in its defense against the invasion by Russia.

“Lockheed Martin does a great job. Their facility is world class and they get the job done,” Alabama Republican Party Chair John Wahl said. “And it’s nice to highlight that. But I think the president should be focused on areas that are broken and that deeply need help today. I want him to be visiting the single mother who is struggling to put food on the table. I want him to visit the middle class, those families paying twice for gas today what they were two years ago. He should be talking to seniors on fixed incomes. People out there struggling to make ends meet.”

Wahl and U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, R-Enterprise, held a press call this morning to talk about Trump’s visit to Pike County, which is in Moore’s district. Moore said he was in the district this morning but was returning to Washington this afternoon and would not be meeting with Biden.

Moore said he has been to the Lockheed Martin plant and said it is an example of the “amazing manufacturing” done in Alabama.

“The president will get to see that labor force today,” Moore said. “But that is not the area he needs to be visiting. He needs to be going to the southern border. The people in Troy, I’ve been to the plant. Lockheed Martin, they do an excellent job building the Javelin. They’re helping the people of Ukraine defend their borders. But we have a border crisis that I’ve been to twice down here and the president hasn’t even bothered to go visit.

“Those people pouring across the southern border, that’s the only supply chain right now in the United States that’s working. And it’s drugs, from the Mexican drug cartels, and it’s human trafficking. That’s the supply chain, the only one that’s working. These are areas the president should be addressing.”

Moore added, “There’s so many things that are so wrong with what the president is doing. And for him to come down and have a taxpayer-funded PR trip down here so people can see him out, that is not what the American people need. We need solutions. We need leadership on a global scale right now.”

Wahl and Moore were asked their reaction to reports about a draft opinion from the U.S. Supreme Court that indicates the justices are planning to overturn the Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision.

Moore said he thinks his biggest concern is that the opinion was leaked. He noted that it was not certain that the report is accurate.

“Obviously, we would love to see Roe v. Wade overturned,” Moore said. “But our concern right now, I think the biggest thing is, (the leak) it’s unprecedented and it’s dangerous. And to me it’s further proof that nothing obstructing the left’s radical agenda is safe.”

The state Republican Party’s platform supports the overturn of Roe v. Wade. Wahl said the news about the draft opinion was encouraging as far as the potential outcome.

“But we think the real concern is the leak,” Wahl said. “Because it undermines our form of government. And it undermines not only the American people but the high court. And we really think that needs to be addressed. Because we can talk about insurrection in a physical manner. But it’s just as much insurrection to undermine the form of government and these protocols that are sacred to our country.”
