WASHINGTON, DC, November 15, 2022— the first of double SSI checks scheduled to go out next month worth. People who receive SSI will received $1,755 within 16 days.
How the payment works
The first of the two payments will be sent out to eligible recipients on Dec. 1, while the next will be delivered on Dec. 30 for those same recipients. For eligible people, the first payment will be worth $841, while the next payment will be worth $914 due to the payments increasing for 2023, according to the Social Security Administration.
Additionally, the rate for eligible couples for monthly payments in 2022 is $1,261, and the rate for 2023 is $1,371. Essential persons, people who live with someone receiving SSI and provide them with necessary care, have a monthly payment rate of $421 for 2022 and will have a rate of $458 in 2023.
The Social Security Administration is increasing the amount recipients receive due in part to the yearly cost-of-living adjustments in order to make sure Social Security payments are able to keep up with inflation.
The Social Security Administration issues monthly SSI checks the business day prior to months that begin on a weekend or holiday to ensure recipients have the check by the first of the month, per the agency. December will be one of these months, as Jan. 1, 2023, is both a day on the weekend and a holiday.
There will be a similar phenomenon for four months in 2023, when two payments are sent to recipients in the same month: March, June, September, and December. The first of the month for April, July, and October fall on a weekend, while December always receives double payments due to Jan. 1 being a holiday.
SSI payments were first issued by the Social Security Administration in January 1974, with payment rates increasing for cost-of-living adjustments since 1975, according to the agency.
About 70 million Americans will get a 8.7% increase in monthly Social Security benefits and SSI payments in 2023.
