ARMENIA—-today Armenia officials prevented an assassination attempt on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the seizure of power by a group of former officials, the National Security Service (NSS) said on Saturday.
Pashinyan had come under pressure with thousands of demonstrators protesting since Tuesday and demanding he resign over a ceasefire that secured territorial advances for Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh after six weeks of fighting.
The NSS said its former head Artur Vanetsyan, the former head of the Republican Party parliamentary faction Vahram Baghdasaryan and war volunteer Ashot Minasyan were under arrest.
“The suspects had been planning to illegally usurp energy by murdering the prime minister and there have been already potential candidates being mentioned to interchange him,” the NSS added.
Pashinyan stated earlier this week that he had no selection however to signal the Russia-brokered deal to stop additional territorial losses. He stated he was taking private accountability for the setbacks, however rejected calls to resign.
The ceasefire halted navy motion in and round Nagorno-Karabakh, an enclave internationally recognised as a part of Azerbaijan however populated by ethnic Armenians.
