WASHINGTON, DC, November 11, 2024 (Bee News Daily) — There are 19 House seats that remain uncalled. The Republicans currently hold 216 seats, while the Democrats have 209 seats. A party needs 218 seats to secure a majority in the House.
Here’s a breakdown of the party holding each of the ten remaining U.S. House races. Incumbents are running in all but California’s 47th district.
Democrats:
- AK-AL
- CA-09
- CA-21
- CO-08
- CA-47
Republicans:
- AZ-06
- CA-13
- CA-27
- CA-41
- CA-45
So far, 12 seats have flipped — six from each party. Six incumbents have been defeated: three Republicans in New York, two Democrats in Pennsylvania, and one in Oregon. See the Changing Parties table for details.
In Alaska, if no candidate secures a majority, the election will proceed to ranked-choice tabulation, scheduled for November 20.
If neither party reaches the 218-seat majority in the House of Representatives, the House would still be able to function, but it would be more challenging to pass legislation.
Parties may need to form coalitions or alliances with independent members or smaller parties to reach a working majority for passing legislation.
The election of the Speaker of the House requires a majority of votes from those present and voting. If no candidate receives a majority, the House continues to vote until a speaker is elected. If the current Speaker, Mike Johnson, does not secure a majority for re-election, he will remain in the position as the acting Speaker until a new Speaker is elected.
For the House to conduct business, a quorum (a majority of members) must be present. If a quorum is not met, the House must adjourn or take steps to secure the attendance of enough members.
