FRANCE — In an extraordinary legal move, French First Lady Brigitte Macron is preparing to present photographic and scientific evidence in a U.S. court to prove that she is biologically female. The action is part of a defamation lawsuit filed by Brigitte and her husband, French President Emmanuel Macron, against conservative American commentator Candace Owens, who has repeatedly promoted a conspiracy theory alleging that Brigitte was born male.
The lawsuit, filed in Delaware in July 2025, accuses Owens of orchestrating a “campaign of global humiliation” by spreading false claims that Brigitte Macron was born as a man named Jean-Michel Trogneux—who is, in fact, her brother. Owens has publicly stated she would “stake [her] entire professional reputation” on the theory, prompting the Macrons to take legal action in the United States after similar cases in France were overturned on appeal.
According to the Macrons’ attorney, Tom Clare, the couple will submit expert testimony and personal documentation to disprove the allegations. This includes scientific evidence and photographs of Brigitte pregnant and raising her children. Clare acknowledged the emotional toll of the process, saying, “It is incredibly upsetting to think that you have to go and subject yourself to this type of proof… But she’s willing to do it. She is firmly resolved to do what it takes to set the record straight”.
The case has drawn international attention, not only for its unusual nature but also for its implications on digital misinformation and the boundaries of free speech. Owens’ legal team has filed a motion to dismiss the case, arguing that Delaware lacks jurisdiction and that defending herself there would cause “substantial financial and operational difficulties”.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the Macrons remain determined to challenge what they describe as “outlandish, defamatory, and far-fetched fictions.” The outcome of the case could set a precedent for how conspiracy theories targeting public figures are handled in international courts.
