Washington, DC — The White House announced Tuesday that more than 2 million illegal immigrants have either been deported or voluntarily left the United States since President Donald Trump returned to office in January. The figure, confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), reflects a sweeping escalation in immigration enforcement and a strategic push to encourage self-deportation.
Press Secretary Statement
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared the update via social media, citing DHS data and praising the administration’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” for turbocharging enforcement efforts.
“The numbers don’t lie: 2 million illegal aliens have been removed or self-deported in just 250 days — proving that President Trump’s policies and Secretary Noem’s leadership are working and making American communities safe,” Leavitt posted.
Breakdown of Departures
- 400,000 individuals were deported by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since late January.
- 1.6 million chose to self-deport, often to avoid arrest or detention.
- DHS anticipates reaching 600,000 deportations by January 2026.
Officials say the combination of increased ICE staffing, expanded detention facilities, and aggressive messaging has led to a dramatic drop in illegal border crossings. A United Nations report cited a 97% reduction in migrants attempting to enter from Central America.
Enforcement and Sanctuary States
DHS officials also criticized states like California, Illinois, and New York for refusing to honor ICE detainers on criminal illegal immigrants.
“These dangerous sanctuary policies… allow criminal illegal aliens to be released back into American communities,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
Political and Legal Implications
The announcement comes amid growing legal challenges and political debate over the administration’s immigration policies. Civil rights groups have raised concerns about due process and the treatment of detainees, while supporters argue the crackdown is necessary to restore border integrity and public safety.
