Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on the United States and its allies to impose sanctions on Israel and suspend arms sales in response to what he described as repeated violations of the Gaza ceasefire agreement. His remarks, delivered aboard the presidential aircraft following a Gulf tour, reflect Turkey’s increasingly assertive role in the region’s diplomacy and its deepening criticism of Israeli military actions.
Erdogan stated that while Hamas has publicly committed to the ceasefire, Israel continues to breach its terms through ongoing military operations in Gaza. “Israel must be forced to keep its promises via sanctions, halting of arms sales,” he said, emphasizing that diplomatic pressure alone is insufficient to ensure compliance.
Turkey, a NATO member and one of the most vocal critics of Israel’s campaign in Gaza, has recently stepped up its involvement in ceasefire negotiations. Erdogan’s appeal follows a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, where Turkey offered to join a multinational task force to oversee the ceasefire’s implementation and contribute to Gaza’s reconstruction efforts.
The Turkish president also reiterated his country’s commitment to humanitarian aid, announcing the arrival of Turkey’s seventeenth aid ship at Egypt’s Port of Al-Arish. He urged Gulf nations to contribute financially to rebuilding Gaza, warning that no single country could shoulder the burden alone.
Erdogan’s comments come amid heightened tensions between Turkey and Israel. Ankara has accused the Israeli government of committing genocide—an allegation Israel strongly denies—and has expressed interest in deploying Turkish forces to Gaza in either a military or civilian capacity. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has signaled opposition to any Turkish role in Gaza, while U.S. officials have remained noncommittal on the matter.
Despite the friction, Erdogan appeared to soften his stance on direct involvement, noting that talks on the task force are ongoing and that Turkey remains ready to support Gaza in any form. His call for sanctions and arms embargoes underscores a broader push to translate political condemnation into concrete international action.
