WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald J. Trump said he helped broker a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia following a renewed outbreak of violence, according to a statement he posted on social media.
In the post, Trump said he held conversations “this morning” with Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet regarding what he described as the “very unfortunate reawakening” of a long-running conflict between the two countries. Trump stated that both governments agreed to cease all shooting effective that evening and to return to the terms of a prior peace agreement that he said had been reached during his presidency.
Trump also credited Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim with assisting in the diplomatic effort, describing him as playing a key role in facilitating dialogue between the two sides. According to Trump’s account, the agreement aims to restore calm and prevent further escalation between the neighboring Southeast Asian nations.
Addressing the trigger for the recent violence, Trump wrote that a roadside bomb incident that killed and wounded Thai soldiers was “an accident,” but acknowledged that Thailand nevertheless responded forcefully. He said both Thailand and Cambodia are now “ready for PEACE” and expressed optimism about the continuation of trade relations with the United States.
“It is my honor to work with Anutin and Hun in resolving what could have evolved into a major war between two otherwise wonderful and prosperous countries,” Trump wrote, adding a note of thanks to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his assistance.
The post reflects Trump’s continued effort to highlight his foreign-policy record and present himself as an active diplomatic figure on the world stage. While the statement outlines Trump’s version of events, official confirmations from the governments involved have not yet been detailed publicly, and the situation remains closely watched as the ceasefire takes effect.
Trump has frequently used social media to underscore what he describes as his role in international negotiations, particularly in regions with longstanding territorial or political disputes.
