TRENTON, N.J. — Two people were killed and nine others wounded after gunfire erupted early Sunday morning in Trenton, New Jersey, prompting a homicide investigation and a large emergency response.
Trenton police responded to reports of multiple shots fired shortly after 12:20 a.m. on August 30 along the 100 block of Locust Street. Officers arriving at the scene found numerous people suffering from gunshot wounds. Early police reports placed the total number of shooting victims at 11, including two people who died.
The surviving victims were transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment. Authorities initially did not release their medical conditions or identify the two people who were killed.
Family members and others at the scene told local media that people had gathered in the neighborhood for a cookout or other community gathering before the shooting began. Investigators were seen placing dozens of evidence markers along the street as they documented the crime scene.
Early reports did not establish exactly what triggered the gunfire. Authorities had not announced any arrests or publicly identified suspects during the initial hours of the investigation. The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force is leading the investigation.
Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora later described the event as a large, unauthorized gathering that attracted an estimated 200 or more people to the residential street. He said the city would examine ways to intervene earlier when unusually large gatherings develop and would deploy community outreach personnel to the neighborhood in an effort to obtain information and prevent retaliatory violence.
The mayor also urged people who attended the gathering and recorded photographs or video to provide that material to investigators.
The shooting left Locust Street transformed into an extensive crime scene as investigators worked to determine how many people opened fire, what led to the violence and who was responsible.
Because the investigation remains active, the number and condition of victims and other circumstances surrounding the shooting could be updated as authorities release additional information.
