COVID-19 Cases Surged In Punjab, India Preparatory Schools Cause For Closure

Punjab, India (March 12, 2021)—As Covid-19 cases have started to surge again, the Punjab government has declared preparatory “leaves” for all classes in the government, government-aided and private schools, as per the announcement made by School Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla on Friday.

India recently recorded the highest rise in Covid-19 cases in 24 hours since December 2020. Several Punjab districts have also imposed strict restrictions including night curfews to tackle the spread of the virus.

The Thursday morning update by the Union Health Ministry noted that Punjab reported 1,393 new Covid-19 cases and 17 deaths in the last 24 hours.

After nearly a year of closure of educational institutes, five state governments–Bihar, Mizoram, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Haryana decided  earlier this month to reopen the schools and colleges in their areas with several Covid-19 health and safety guidelines in place for the students and staff.
