Police: Train derails in Merrill, asks public to avoid area

MERRILL, Wis. (June 16, 2021) —A train has derailed near the Center Ave viaduct in Merrill.

According to a post from the Merrill Police Department, the scene continues to be active and are asking that onlookers avoid the area in vehicles and on foot.

According to the News 9 reporter on scene, at least three cars have derailed.

Police say that traffic controls are in place, but the News 9 reporter on scene says all roads and the river walk are open. Access to the Agra Pavilion parking lot is not available at this time.

Police say recovery and repair crews will be on scene throughout the day.

In a released statement, the Merrill Police Department stated “The train derailment near the Center Ave viaduct is an active scene which does not need the added complication of onlookers. It is also dangerous to be near when repair operations are underway. Traffic controls are in place and they are not to be disregarded. Recovery and repair crews will be working throughout the day to correct the situation. Unfortunately, access to the Agra Pavilion parking area is not possible during this time. Stay clear of the scene, both by vehicle and on foot. People found disregarding these traffic controls and lawful orders will be cited and/or arrested.”
